What is Early Intervention?

Early Intervention is a coordinated, family-focused system of resources, supports and services for eligible infants and toddlers birth to 3 years who have developmental delays. Early Intervention is supported by federal, state, and private funding sources.

Importance of Nutrition

At no other time in the lifecycle is nutrition delivery more important for health, growth, and development than during early childhood (birth to 3 years). The right amounts of macronutrients like protein, fat, and carbohydrates and micronutrients like vitamin A, iodine, iron and zinc are essential to brain and motor development for all children.

Nutrition Therapy in Early Intervention

As a part of Early Intervention Services, Nutrition Therapy focuses on teaching parents and caregivers ways to promote and support a child’s nutritional growth. Nutrition therapy supports children and their parents in regard to:

  • Prematurity and Low Birth Weight

  • Failure-to-Thrive

  • 1st Time Parents

  • Lactation Concerns (Breastfeeding)

  • Food Aversions / Selective Eaters

  • Restricted Diets (Renal, cardiac, gluten free, peanut, egg or shellfish allergies)

  • Tube feeding or TPN management (total parenteral nutrition)

  • GI concerns such as chronic constipation, diarrhea or acid reflux

  • Diagnoses (kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, autism, etc).
